The Board of Trustees of Temple University is beginning a presidential search and invites inquiries, applications and nominations. The university has an enrollment of more than 39,000 students on numerous campuses including the main campus in north Philadelphia, and campuses in Japan and Italy. With 17 schools and colleges serving undergraduate, graduate, professional and non-degree students, Temple is the 30th largest university in the United States. The university strives to maintain its historic commitment to providing access and affordable high quality education for its students, and building its research profile. The university’s budget for fiscal year 2012 is $2.2 billion, including the Temple University Health System. Temple has NCAA Division I intercollegiate athletics programs.
The new leader will be Temple University’s 10th president since its founding in 1884. Leadership challenges for the new president will include enhancing a strong team of senior administrators and deans; actively representing the university at all levels including federal, state, city and neighborhood; addressing the shrinking base of public financial support; leading a capital campaign; building the university’s research profile while maintaining its commitment to teaching of the highest quality; providing for a vibrant student life; and overseeing the management of the university’s healthcare enterprise.
The university is seeking candidates of compelling vision, dynamic presence, and unquestioned integrity. The ideal candidate will have a distinguished record of accomplishment in higher education, business, government and/or the non-profit world. All candidates must have a demonstrated understanding of and commitment to the mission and values of the university, including a commitment to diversity and an understanding of the nature of large urban universities. Familiarity with issues of health sciences and healthcare will be important. Candidates with a background in higher education should have a terminal degree and academic accomplishments that earn the respect of the academic community. Candidates whose background is in other areas should have professional accomplishments and education at an equally high level.
